i have a 1985 f150, original 300 inline 6 (now has 351w), 4 speed tran on floor, my truck will not start from the switch, aux. works, but when u turn it to crank it, it just stays and doesnt flip back(it has a button connected to silinoid), it was like this when i got it, it looks to have a new lock cylinder and ignition plug at base of steering, i was wondering as to what else could be stopping it from starting with the switch, i thought neutral safety switch, is there anything else? any info would help
It might be the ignition switch near the base of the steering column. When I replaced mine last weekend I noticed that the switch is on a slide that has 3 or 4 possitions. If you do not install correctly you can have a bit of trouble.
There should be a metal tube on top of your steering column that connects to your ignition switch, and 2 screws just to the side which hold it into place. Just loosen these (just a touch) and slide the switch toward you. After that turn the key all the way to the Start possition. After you let go of the key it should snap back into place in the Run possition. Tighted the bolts to your ignition switch and verify that all possitions are correct.
A defective ignition switch as well as a possibly mis-alighned one described by RTtennant71 is the most likely problem. It has a spring to spring back the switch and it can break or the rod can bind.
First you will need to fix what the previous owner has done, then fix the problem the right way. First I'd look at the Ignition switch, then the NSS on the tranny.

If it all works tighten it down good.
Found mine at autozone for about 20 bucks or so.

X2 Here is the installation instructions from the Haynes Repair Manual, section 12-6
When installing, Ignition switch and lock cylinder MUST BE in the lock position.
Install the switch by first engaging the actuator rod into the switch. Position the switch on the steering column and install the nuts finger tight.
Move the switch up and down along the column and when you locate the mid-point of rod lash, tighten the retaining nuts.
