I have a 1965 Ford F100 that came out with 240. The person I bought it from put a 1984 300 in it. He used the distributor out of the 65 - 240 and put it in the 1984 - 300, will that cause the engine not to run right. I had the truck in time and it hits on the first lick. But it spark knocks, so I was told to advance the time and run Premium gas in it. But when I am driving it, it seems like it is still spark knocking. Also when I am shifting gears and I rev it up to high it don't sound right either. Thanks in advance.
I'm sure others will chime in. The 240 dizzy (distributor) will work in your 300. You need to know the 65, 240 dizzy has vacuum advance only. You need to have the vacuum line disconnected at dizzy when you set timing. I believe base timing is 6 degrees BTDC. You need to set this correctly. Then hook up your vacuum line and with the timing light watch the mark as you accelerate the engine. You should see the timing advance and return back to your 6 degrees as the engine returns to idle. Do this all with a warmed up engine and idle speed set to spec, I THINK about 550-600.
Do you know if you are using the 65 or the 84 carb. This could also be your problem. The 65 dizzy should be matched to the 65 carb. If its the 84 carb then your advance will not operate properly and as I think about it, it will over advance the timing most of the time.
Let us know how you make out

Reason: additional thought to the problem
Even if it is the correct distributor, it's most likely wallered out and all gummed up, bushings shot, will have too much runout and erratic mechanical advance, vacuum diaphragm shot etc. Replace it.
