6.0's and 6.4's are share a lot of the same problems with lifters, rockers, turbos, heat related items in general. my favorite which I noticed I have is the noisy rockers which fords official response is that its a normal dynamic @#$%^& due to engine geometry and that dealers should not attempt any fix under warranty....then later...the rocker tips and lifters fail once the turck is out of warranty.
big design change for the 6.7......a bar across all the rockers with oil jets to improve rocker lubrication. Lets see how many rocker and lifter related failures will be on the 6.7
When I pull my engine.....I'm going to rig up an equiv rocker lube solution.

The 6.0L and the 6.4L engines are a product of International Truck And Engine Corp. (Navistar) with whom Ford Motor Company had a long relationship with. This relationship went sour over the high warranty costs incurred by the defects and shortcomings of both of the engines mentioned. You can read this quick article explaining the issue: Ford and Navistar Settle Diesel Engine Dispute - PickupTrucks.com News There are more articles like this and you can find them by Googling "Ford and Navistar"
The result was Ford engineering and building it's own diesel engine which is the 6.7L Power Stroke.
Incidentally, the main reason for the engine changes has been to meet increasingly stricter emissions standards and to meet customer demands for more power and drivability. You will read many and varied opinions, theories, stories and misconceptions in these forums and others like it but it is as simple as I mentioned. In my humble opinion the result is a better product and better product development and support going forward.
Now, if you want to nit-pick on each of the engines' flaws and have a pissing contest on which one is better or worse, well, have at it.

Ford had an exclusive contract with Navistar to supply diesel engine until 2011, as you can see in Ford Doctor's link. However, the relationship went sour due to the 6.0 debacle, and the raising of prices by Navistar.
Both players went their separate ways. It was a semi-bitter divorce. Personally, I say good riddance to Navistar. Most of their reputation was made by the bulletproof 7.3 liter engine. After that, they choked on their own success, did not invest enough in their business, especially their emissions technology.
