a c5 is basicly a c4 with electronic lock up the case is the same and most of the internals are the same main outside difference is the c5 pan is deeper than the c4 to conseal the electronic lockup silanoid but the same bolt pattren this makes a cheap way to get a deep pan for better cooling on a c4 just use one from a c5
All,
I would apologize to Biggreen for sidetracking his string.
Secondly, can I get a consensus on:
Is a FMX, a C5?
Or is it another beast?
I think not. The gasket for a C6 is the same as a FMX. Therefore, FMX does not = C5?

C4 is 3spd A/T alloy case w/ removable bellhousing like C3. The bellhsg serves as front pump cover. C4 Is light duty 3spd A/T.
C5 looks like C4, but bellhsg & frt pump cover are separate. 2 rings of bolts not 1 like C4. C5 = HD version of C4 technology. C5s use air cooler for ATF + cooler in radiator. C5's in trucks & vans. C5 has better ratios, especially a 14 pass van w300-6. My C5 has no elec' stuff except NSS & B/U Lmp Switch, no lock up. C4 & C5 cases may appear close, but not same. Nor are internal components.
C6 is what 60's cruise-0-matic became, big heavy, I piece case, power robbing but strong transmissions.
FMX is what 51 Fordomatic grew up to be. It has Cast Iron case, alloy bell & tail shaft. IMHO it's Junk. It can't get rid of heat, has poor ratios, is heavy & power robbing....
I run "built" C5 behind 460, turns mid 12's. C5 has P/I -Taxi clutch pack, SS Bands, HD brg pak, solid front pump disc (no Slots)shift kit set to cams' power curve.
Yup.. . . a 66 F100 on a 79 F150 tailer special chassis. it's SWB C/C 31 spline 4 pinion 9" 3.00 FoMoCo rear 29.75" x 10" DOT cheaters on 15x10 "Wagonwheels".
It's 460 through "built" C5, as mentioned. D1VE block & heads, OEM Cast Iron Intake w/ 780 CFM Motorcraft 4V. Headers, turbo mufflers, 2.25" exhaust full length. 69 SCJ Cam, roller timing set, and am dialed in. I catch high gear, (direct in an A/T) about 300 feet out of traps & I'm in middle of powerband as I go thru.
I look bad leaving & @ 60' mark. Midrange & T/E is gangbusters. best top end to date 124.650+. 124+mph is good T/E for 12.60 ET's in a truck. Chevelle guys hate me. Nobody likes losing to a F100, ya know? Don't know who gets more "bent" Chevelle guys or latter day Pony crowd. They don't like old man in a fast pick up going by them. Specially if they had 4 or 5 lengths @ 60' mark.
Oh Well . . . .that's racin'
