How good is an FMX for towing? I'm talking light duty towing, like a car or truck, and only occasionally. Sometimes it may be long distance (picking up vehicles from other states) I know the C6 is a good trans for towing, but I have a good FMX here from my '70 Mustang that I might put in my 351W equipped '46. Is this a decent enough trans? I have good luck with them in my '70, wonder how they would be for towing. TIA
The only kick to using the FMX is lack of hot rod stuff.Well, they are heavier then a C-6 also.I had an FMX in my 79 for several years and towed my 24ft. enclosed car trailer with it.They are a pretty good trans for everyday use.
Yeah, I know that the aftermarket never really made much as far as performance stuff for the FMX, except for a shift kit. I was figuring it might work if I through on a good trans cooler and all. Thanks.
Gary, For my two, I think if I had a FMX installed I would use it, but if I were going to install an auto I would use the C6, just because it is later technology, and parts could be easier to find in case you had a breakdown on the road.

Gary I'd say that you're gonna be just fine with using a healthy FMX for just about any kind'a towing that you wanna do. That FMX is a Borg-Warner, and as tough as the come. The Ford has liquid cooling and the same transmission is used in almost every Studebaker made, but they just used plain ol' air cooling. No problem with towing with my Studebakers, ever. Oh, and the same transmission/convertor combination, in stock configuration, was used in a 7 time NHRA drag racing class champion, running a dual-turbo'ed Studebaker engine pushing around 700 hp, without a failure. I think you're covered partner.
