Stuck w/Trans install

I just put a new clutch (NP435) in my 76 HB, I have the transmission almost all the way seated, However I am looking for tips on getting the shaft seated into the pilot bushing. I cant seem to accomplish this last little task in order to finish. I did verify prior to installation that the pilot bushing fit on the shaft. Any tips or tricks would be helpful.

Did you use an alignment tool to make sure the clutch disc was centered with the pilot bearing before you tightened the pressure plate down?
This is necessary to keep from having to fight the trans to get it to go in.

Absolutely did, everything else slid together super easy, but I can't seem to get that last little bit

Not familiar with the NP435 but mine has clutch fork with throwout bearing.....when I replaced my clutch I could not get that sucka up to the bell housing that final inch. Finally put a little lithium grease on shaft and viola it slipped in. I replaced the boot when I rebuilt the motor and hasn't been an issue since......I guess that new boot holds it in place better than the dry rotted one.

Its more about getting trans completely level engine, that's my problem. I can feel the shaft bumping the bearing, but cant quite line it up on the hole.

I have had that issue with every trans install I have ever done. My advice is to cuss at it- A LOT. Worked every time for me so far, your mileage may vary.

The pilot bushing inside the back of the crank creates an air pocket. When i did a clutch on my highboy with a np435 i had to get behind the transmission and push or kick torwards the motor to overcome the air pocket. if that doesent work try using a screwdriver to put it in gear so you can turn the yoke to spin the input shaft and try pushing in while turning the yoke maybe itll slip in. Dont force it with the bolts or else youll have even bigger problems unless the input shaft is aligned with the pilot bushing

Are you using trans alignment shafts? AKA extra long bolts with the heads cut off and bench grinder rounded ends? In the pic the ends are fresh cut off and not ground on yet.

At the dealer when one was difficult to seat all the way, we would either hook up the clutch linkage or just pry the clutch fork back to push in the clutch, that allows you free up the clutch disc so you can wiggle the pilot shaft in the bearing, it took two people and was a wrestle, that method usually worked, (only after one guy fought it for a hour) if not pull it back out and re-align the disc and try again, this trans was already in the truck? not parts being assembled for the first time.
