Red face Trouble mounting a transmission

So I got this problem. I'm trying to install a Heavy Duty T98 (1 - 3/8th input shaft) in my 66 F100, and I have it almost in. The problem is I can't get it's 175 pounde bulk to align with the clutch. while it was out of the truck, I checked the clutch on the shaft, and it fits, but the tolerance is tight and it's hard to align even out of the truck.

Anyone had experiance with this kind of problem, or have any sugestions? I've been at trying to get it to align for 6 hours with no luck.

Did you use the correct clutch alignment tool? And use it correctly?
If not, you will never get it in.
If it is properly aligned, a transmission jack will be of great help if it is tight. Try your local rental place.

Have a buddy press the clutch while you wiggle and shake the trans, it will slip right in. Some setups don't allow this trick, but if you can do it, it works.

What about the pilot bearing? Are the input shaft diameters the same?

Pilot bearing! Clutch aligning tool (old transmission input shaft). Jack to support that heavy SOB. Then bump the starter!!! Careful!

The pilot bearing isn't the problem, yet. R Pope's idea may make that easier when I get that far, but for now I can't get the input shaft to go into the clutch disk at all. The splines are touching, but there is no tapered edge, and the fit is too close.

I tried to find a transmission jack that would work, but they were all rated for 100 to 125 pounds and had flat bottoms. the deer scale shows this thing at 175 pounds, and it won't sit flat, the bottom is lopsided,(oversized PTO boss) So I couldn't use one without building some form of adjustable cratle for it to sit in. I'm having to use an engine hoist to lift it up.

I've put a dozen transmissions in various cars. most the time I'd just lay on my back and lift the transmission up, wiggle it around till it slid in, and get someone to put the bolts in. easy enough when the transmission weighs 50 to 75 pounds. but not something I can handle when the transmission weighs as much as I do.

sometimes its just wiggle and fight, try putting the trans in a gear and turning the output shaft a little, sometimes that helps the spline to align with the disc
