Clutch Equalizer '49

How do you replace the spring and bearing halves in the equalizer shaft?

Disconnect the linkage, pull the pin out of the clutch side and swing it clear.

That does not make any sense to me on how to replace the internal parts of the clutch shaft.

Are you talking about the bushings in the half-bell on the trans, or what? Not clear. MT's description is correct for the two half-bushings in the DS end of the "Z-bar" or equalizer shaft.

I have the whole asssembled part out with the ball/mounting plate attached. Are you saying I need it mounted in the truck and move the shaft to one side, prying the ball out of the socket?

Just pull the shaft off the ball, there's nothing holding it in.

Mine wont pull apart for some reason. It pivots ok but wont come apart. I guess I need to put it in a vise and pull it apart.

Try pivoting it as far to one side as possible. Look at the pic below to see how the bushings fit over the ball (ignore the junk the the right).

Wow, I've never seen one of those shafts that didn't just fall off the ball and the brass bushings fall out in pieces.

LOL, those pieces to the right of the new bushings in my pic are what was left of one of the bushings, and a hose clamp the PO stuck in there to take up the slack! Yeah, it came apart "easy"! (It actually worked pretty good!)

I noticed that the new bearings sold are plastic, are they junk?

Plastic may well be an improvement. You can see what's left of the bronze in my pic. How often do people grease these? Not a lot of force involved just dirt and neglect.

Similar bushings (nylon or plastic) were used by Ford on my brand new '77 F100 way back when.

Ok farmer john did it to me again. Found out why it was tought to get the ball out: the farmer used a steel sleeve to hold the ball in. I am going to have a hell of a time removing the sleeve. If I use the plastic sleeve do I still need to grease it and what keeps the the sleeve from turning?
