Hey guys, I have a 68 Bronco that I have upgraded to a 351 Windsor. I recently wore out my c4. I have purchased a early model AOD. Been looking at the adapter cost and driveline modifications. Just trying to figure out if there is a newer transfer case that will bolt directly to my 4 wheel drive AOD- like possibly hey Bronco ll transfer case or and 208. I guess I should mention this is 8th Street runner mostly with 33 s a big cam and a lot of horsepower... I know the Dana 20 is strong and small but trying to look at all my options.
Thanks and happy holidays
From what I've heard, all of the non-iron transfer cases Ford has used are interchangeable, at least as far as the transmission goes. If what I've heard is true you should be able to attach any Ford transfer case to your AOD, as long as it's not cast iron.
I did have an AOD in my Bronco for a while with an adapter to the stock Model 20. That's an option, but it does require an adapter, and it requires completely disassembling the trans to install the adapter. edit: the adapter I used was from Advance Adapters, as chrlsful recommended below. I think it cost around $500 and I had it installed for "free" (it didn't add any cost to the full rebuild the trans went through). It also required some cutting and welding on the crossmember, but nothing too difficult.
Keep in mind that Bronco frames are narrow, not all transfer cases will fit easily. I'm not sure what does or doesn't, but I BARELY fit an Atlas 2 into mine, with the 'case clocked down as far as possible.
Check in w/Advance they have all the knowledge parts and resources. They seem to B able to do just about anything (for a price, & a high one @ that).
Google Advance Adapters
(or is it advanced?)
Also check the transmission or driveline archive at Classic Bronco dot com or simply post a thread w/that Q.
I don't follow that line as the C4 is ideal ("least parasitic" of the autos) so don't know off hand.
Good Luck, let us know what U find!
I just finished having my AOD for my 73 F100 rebuilt and the guy put the gear set out of an AODE in it and wow what a difference. The 1st and 2nd gears are a lower ratio and it's like having 3.70's instead of the 3.50 I have. They used the AODE behind the 4.6 which didn't have the torque of the small block motors, but the AODE has better guts then the AOD has. There's lots of stuff on the web about doing this google it when you get a chance.
I would look into a BG 1345 or 1356, both can be clocked to give some clearance and both are stout given the setup you have.
be sure you to have the TV cable adjusted correctly on that AOD or you will burn it up quickly. And like mentioned the AODE/4R70W gear set will provide a lower 1, 2nd gear.
