Transfer Case for AOD?

Hey Guys,

A couple of years ago, I asked about a parts list for a 2wd to 4wd conversion for my 1991 F-350 and a lot of you gave me some great tips. I have since began to acquire the parts to do it and will soon start the project.

Question: what transfer case was used on the 4wd F350's with the 460/7.5L with the 4 speed AOD tranny. Was it the BW13-45 or 13-56? The tranny is in great condition and I would like to use it in my 4wd conversion.

Also wanted to know if anyone thinks a divorced transfer case set up would be a better way to go for my application.

This project is being purpose built as a serious recovery rig and it has been very well thought out. I have been taking my time getting all the info I can, having a lot of help and ideas from professionals and serious wheelers.

Thanks for your help!

I doubt that they put a aod behind a 7.5 but in my truck with the 302 aod has a 1356 transfer case

Transfer Case for AOD

If I don't have a AOD hooked up to my 7.5L, is it the E40D with overdrive moving this beast? I heard that the BW13-56 was used more on the bigger trucks (3/4 and 1 Ton) as a general rule.

The AOD was not factory installed behind anything bigger than a 5 liter truck motor, and there never was a big block version. So, you either have a C6 3-speed or E4OD.. the latter being computer controlled and will have electrical connections on it.

If you are going to use the AOD, I would definitely recommend beefing it up. Having just burned out my AOD on my 351 (from apparently incorrectly adjusting things). I've found many upgrade parts for the AOD that will allow it to withstand up to 800hp and stand Mustangs on their rear tires.
I'll be having mine rebuilt next month after I get my tax return back. AOD Performance Products - Baumann Electronic Controls has all the parts necessary to strengthen them. For your application, I'd personally add all their performance parts for strengthening the AOD.

Although for a recovery rig, the C6 is most likely the the stronger of the transmissions for the job. No OD, but probably better anyway for the application.

Really.. what did you do wrong? The TV cable is the only external adjustment I'm aware of.

BTW... the OP definitely does not have an AOD, there never was a big block version.

I didn't think they put the AOD in there like you said, but if someone else had, I read it can be built up strong.
From what I've read and heard talking to people, having that cable incorrectly adjusted long enough (I've put several hundred miles on it since I dropped in the 351) it will burn up the OD direct clutches and eventually 3rd, like mine is doing now.

Paul, I'm surprised I hadn't seen you post on my thread about my AOD problems. I was hoping for your input, since I thought you had a similar setup. I am hoping it's not too late for my tranny. Gonna try to readjust the TV cable on it today, but I'm afraid there is no rescue for it except a rebuild.

Thread returned to OP...

Maybe you misunderstand, that's simply not possible since the AOD was never produced with a big block bellhousing bolt pattern, so there's no way it could be swapped in either.

I'm going to have a look at your post right now....

My bad. Didn't realize the 460 bellhousing pattern was different.
