AOD ID.

How would one go about identifying an AOD?

Cool Thanks. Now I just need to find a good AODE with transfer case. Does anybody have any I dea what ransfer case came behind the AODE?

you can remove the tailshaft on any aode, and put your adapter and transfer case on it.

Charlie, are you 100% certain on that? On most slushboxes you can remove the tailshaft housing, the shaft itself is about the first thing to go in from the front when the trans is put together and so the last thing to go out when it's taken apart, so swapping tail shafts usually is not an easy task. And of course the 4x4-specific transmissions tend to run shorter tail shafts than the 2wd models, so if you are to use a transfer case on one of the 2wd models you'll also need some sort of spacer to go between the T-case adapter and the trans housing and take up the extra length of the 2wd tail shaft... So does the AODE use the same tailshafts in both its 2wd and 4x4 versions?

I just want to know out of curiosity. I need to find a AODE with a transfer case attached regardless if its the best transfer case to use as a boat anchor. I have a very special build in the future and want to know what to look for. Thanks for your help greatly appreciated.

when my aode in my 94 died, I got one for a linclon from the junk yard, and took it to a rebuild shop.that guy took it apart, and put my adapter on it, and I used that for a while. once the torque converter in that one crapped out like the other one did, it took o/d out too, so I bought the most recent one from ford.the transfer case on mine is shift on the fly, I think it isa borg warner, and is specific to the aode.

Yup, and I bet the guy at the transmission shop swapped your truck tailshaft into the Lincoln transmission so it's the proper length to match your T-case and adapter - tail shafts rarely get damaged when the transmission dies, so it's only normal to move them from one trans to another unless you make a specific request for a new one, whether factory or aftermarket... But this is getting a bit beyond the scope of this discussion.

I agree, that's why this last trans came from ford. 3 years, 100,000 mile warranty. can't beat it.
