what should it cost to re gear the ttb d44 and the 8.8 with new bearings and the like? I was quoted at like 1,100 for just labor, seems high to me...

The typical number I've heard is $1000 / axle, so $1100 isn't terrible. Some say you can get as low as $600 labor, so it might be worth shopping around.
