I recently figured out that I have two dead cylinders on my 1991 F250 EFI 460 mated to a ZF5. At this point after doing about 12 hours of research I'm planning on getting an S&J engines long block. They have a 7 year 100k miles warranty and long block is about $2,000. They are also located in Spokane WA and I'm in Marysville, WA so shipping should be quick. I'd like to keep the costs down but I'm willing to spend more for power and reliability.
Anyway I am asking you guys for any advice or input regarding a crate engine or rebuild options. I am hoping to make the MAF switch after the new engine goes in but I'll probably have to wait until summer. I would normally attempt the rebuild myself but my wife is about to pop with our first born and I'm expecting to not have a whole lot of free time. Thanks in advance for any advice!
Mass-air.com has the quick and painless method of swapping over to MAF on these trucks.
Comes with its own standalone Trans controller from us-shift.
Even tho my Ford racing crate is a small block, it's the same process.
As far as a crate you would get back to stock numbers.
For the time and with the new born on the way I would have to say the long block is the smart choice for now.
Do you need the 460? I shopped for two years before I found the used F250 I have with a 460. However, I don't need the large motor and I pay for it every time I stop at the gas station. Will a 351 suffice? You may find the MPG are more tolerable. Having said that, you've owned the 460 and you know it's reliable and powerful. I don't worry when I do tow large payloads.
MAF is supposed to allow room to grow later on. It also is supposed to improve drivability and MPG's some I love the Iidea of a booster 460 but im a ways away from that. I went ahead and ordered a S&J long block. Very nice people to work with and it should arrive at my door today.
I would not bother with spending money on a mod that will not really net you much other than a lighter wallet. If you do end up going boosted then make the plunge.

Agreed.
And that is a SMOKING deal on a rebuilt 460, no less with a 7 year 100k warranty
