I have a 460 that has 416,000 miles and has been rebuilt 3 times.
the last time it was up to 490, and it has 200,000 on that rebuild.
does it have one more rebuild in it?
what is the max?
My god, with that many miles it should be like some kind of record breaker or something.
I would like to just have half the moneys spent buying gas in my pocket.
416.000, rebuilt 3 times & then been another 200.000 put on it, yeah, somebody need to call Ripleys beleave it or not.
Ol 460s tuff though.
Neil
and most of the miles where towing a 40' 5th wheel.
It is also on it original trany. Its a T19 4 speed, never rebuilt.
lots of slop and you have to double clutch it, but it still works!
Its hard to say if you could bore it anymore than you already have.
There a test, called a sonic test they do to see how thick the cylinder walls are. Bunch of different block numbers were checked & the D9TE block, which is probably what you have, is said to be the thinnest in some of the cylinder bores out of the other 460 blocks.
Go to, 460 Ford Forum - Powered by vBulletin & go into the forums & you can find this testing page.
One site I went to, cant remember where it was, but the sonic test showed the D9 block as only having 0.093 thickness in one part of #2 cylinder. That be the case, if the blocks were that thin then you should have already sprang a leak in the bore.
I read some saying about having the cylinders sleeved, but dont know any details about that.
I'm not a 460 guru but do have one I'm working on & know what I've read about them the guys are saying & most what they are telling is true.
If one says something not right about the 460, theres quite a few will correct them in short order to get the story right.
