Rebuild or Replace 460?

I have a tired 460 in my 79 f250 - all original. Just talked to my friends and they say I should replace engine with a remanufactured 460. They say its cheaper. I was wondering if I should redo the original engine to keep the original block, #'s, etc... Anyone with a preference please let me know.

people care about #'s in trucks now?

I sure hope ford trucks don't go down the dark path of #'s $$ inflation that corvettes and mopars are seeing

If you want an engine rebuilt correctly, the only way is to do it yourself. A reman engine from one of the reputable suppliers like Jasper is gonna cost you over $2000. Do it yourself and you know exactly what's in it. Cheaper, too.

I wouldn't trust a reman engine from the Auto Zones, etc. You have no idea where it came from or what was done to it. I've heard of motors that only had one cylinder bored, etc.

Do the labor yourself and farm out the machine work.

You do it yourself and you know exactly what you have when your done.

You get what you pay for. Years ago I bought a remanufactured short-block (Buick) to install for a co-worker. The block came from a well known auto parts house. When it came time to do the install I opened the bag it was sealed in and noticed someones hair sitting on the timing chain sprocket. I attemted to wipe off the "hair" but it didn't move. After closer inspection I found the hair was really a crack-line across the full width of the sprocket.
So I have to side with Scoob and Superdave. You'll end up with a better product.

Deen

It may cost a little more to do it yourself and may take a little while longer, but it's well worth it.

Let's not forget job satisfaction. It's nice to tell your friends that the engine in your ride is one you rebuilt yourself.

And I'll throw in, do your homework on the machinist you use.

A dork for a machinist can quickly kill your project, no matter what you do.

Just rebuilded a '83 460 had 198,000 with nitrous. going back stock with kit from Flatlander racing. I have around $1200.00 in kit and machining. I suggest that you rebuild it yourself if you can.
