Well, got my injectors out today. One was a reman and the rest appear to be original. The one reman's o rings were still pliable and the rest were pretty hard and somewhat flat. A few of the pink ones were totally black like maybe oil was moving past them. The tan ones looked even worse. The brass or copper crush washer on the bottoms looked pretty good except for one. Half of it was black and the same side of the injector sleeve was black as well. It was the one that was only torqued to 60 inch pounds. The rest of the injectors looked fairly good considering. A friend told me there is a place in Charlotte NC (30 minutes away) that will flow test them for me. Anyone have any idea what places charge to do that service? Thinking of having that done before I put them back in. Also should I go ahead and put my new o rings on before they go there to be done? Have a feeling the o rings were mostly my problem. Hopefully!
I'm not convinced I'd bother with having them flow tested, honestly. I think I'd just remove the solenoids and measure the armature plate to poppet valve body clearance with feeler gauges. Any that have less than 0.0015" clearance are getting close to replacement.
Thanks, have seen videos on doing that. The reman doesn't look like it had much use on it. The truck had seen sitting for quite some time. The oil in the hpop was very black and real thick. Think most of it would have drained out when I pulled the back plug between 6 and 8 and between 5 and 7 cylinders? Should I try and get more out so it has fresh oil to run the injectors? Newbie question. It ran pretty good except for the bad smoking at 2300 rpm's.
You probably could, but it can be a double edged sword. If it's over-shimmed, or the upper seat is badly worn, the armature plate can strike the solenoid and start popping codes, shut down the whole bank, or damage the solenoid. I've still got one injector that consistently refuses to operate cold because of clearance issues, but it's been that way for at least a year. I have a couple ideas I'm going to try in order to avoid shimming, but I don't know if it will work. Having said that, plenty of people have shimmed them with no problem at all.
#8 ae injector clearance is less than .0015. #2 has .002-.0025 # 4 reman with .003 all around and #6 has .0025 all around. Have a problem. #3 want come out. Not enough clearance to get it out. Can't even get my torx in there to try and get the solenoid off to try it that way. Any idea what it takes to get that one out. This sux! lol
Getting ready to check the others in a few.
