Go by the miles, and get the first 3-4 changes done every 3,000 miles because it's a new engine. Then I would go to every 5,000 from there.

Go with 3,000 every time. I can't go 5,000 without changing oil. Grew up on every 3,000 and that's what it will be for me. I know I'm probably wasting money, but who cares?

Unless you don't drive that much in a year - if a year goes by, its time to change the oil even if its synthetic and even if its only got 2000 miles on it.

Yes, I always advise my low-mileage customers to change their oil every 6 months or every 3,000 miles. In all honestly they could probably go a year, but the people who still come for regular oil changes under these conditions are a bit paranoid to begin with, so I've found 6 months is a good medium for them.
