I have a 2000 Excursion w/ V10 and I have an issue with the transmission form time to time. some times it does not want to shift out of first. if I pull over and turn it off for a few minutes it will be fine for a while and it doesn't do this all the time. A few nights ago it did this so I pulled over and turned it off and it still did it but then it started shifting on its own just fine till we got on the high way which is started shifting in and out of over drive going around 60-65 MPH. didn't want to go too fast not knowing what it could or would do. it did this for a few miles then it started working fine. next day it did the same thing not wanting to shift out of first then started working fine. drove it around last night and it all worked perfectly. The CEL is on but I get a no communication text from the scanner so that is another thing I need to look in to. I'm guessing it is an electrical issue being when it works it shifts fine and it does not slip at all. any help in pointing me in a direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the reply Mark. I'll start there and see what I can find out. I read some where that you may need a certain kind of scanner to read the codes. It's a 2000 so I don't know how true that is. I may bring it to Autozone and see if they can tell me if theirs can connect to it or not. if it can I find out what the code is.
Most parts store code readers can pull the basic codes, but they won't be able to get ALL of them. Yours being a 2000 is irrelevant.
Is your OD light blinking at all when the symptoms occur? That generally indicates a transmission issue whereas the CEL encompasses everything.
I agree with RBerry on checking the fuse. If your cigarette lighter doesn't work, then there's a good chance that's the problem. The fuse feeds the OBDII port as well as the lighter.
No Matt the OD light never blinks. I'm thinking the CEL light is a coil issue being it misses from time to time but not when I am trying to figure out which coil it is.
You'd be surprised, these things can go bonkers when there's rampant electrical gremlins. Somebody has had their ABS system go nuts with a sporadically misfiring and shorting coil, I had my dash lights and HVAC functioning randomly with a random short in the right rear brake light wiring, etc.
Not saying that's the cause of your issues, but it would be worth looking into the coil problem as well to see what's going on there - you'd be surprised what systems get messed up by other completely unrelated systems having electrical issues.
Torque Pro and a Bluetooth dongle can go a LONG way in helping you diagnose, monitor, log, etc issues you're having in addition to reading and clearing codes. Just some food for thought, a lot of people here run it.
I have 4 new coils I ordered, I have an idea which coil it is but wanting solid evidence before I go changing parts. I like to keep extra coils around just for this reason. It has another issue when first starting when it is cold that I think I just need to clean the IAC motor and passages in the intake and that should fix that problem.
had the same problem and it turned out the solenoid pack in the tranny was bad... Had it replaced, all was good. Not a cheap fix but, less than a new tranny!
I will keep that in mind WI Camper. Well, I changed 3 of the coils on it this weekend and also found that the fuse was blown for the data link connector. the SES light went out and the truck is running and driving fine now. Will bring it by AZ sometime this week to see if they can tell me what codes are stored in the ECM. Changed the parts Saturday and drove it around that afternoon and Sunday and my wife brought the kids to school in it Monday and have not had anymore issues with it.
it did the same thing in march/april of this year and the fuel pump ended up going out along with two of the coils. changed the pump, filter and coils out and it lasted until now when some more coils started going out. I found these coils on Amazon for 10.00 per coil which is why I keep extras lying around. got the same ones on my Expedition that I changed over two years ago and have not had any problems with them but for some reason her Excursion likes to snack on them. What would you guys recommend other than OEM coils.

To read ALL the codes that's very true.

Not generally, that ALWAYS means there is a transmission issue.

They can only read codes that turn on the CEL. They can't read any manufacturer specific codes, and Ford uses a lot of those to help with diagnostics. They also won't read the codes unless the CEL is on right then. So always tell them it's on, I've never seen them check.

I use coils from Standard Products. They make the Motorcraft coils, but the ones with their name are a lot cheaper than ones that say Motorcraft. I once toured their factory, some coils had Motorcraft on them and went into Motorcraft boxes. Others went into Standard Product boxes. They were built on the same line at the same time.
Good info Mark. I will keep that in mind. I'll bypass AZ and bring it to a shop I used to work at that has a Ford scan tool that will be able to dig in to the ECM better. Will also hunt down the Standard Products coils and start replacing them all. My wife drives this truck with our kids so I want to make sure everything is working good for her.
is this them? Standard Motor Products FD503T Ignition Coil
Ok, I might be getting off topic here but I went back and looked at what I was buying before and I was ordering DG508 coils for both my Expedition and Excursion. have had the DG508's in my Expedition w/ 5.4 for 2 years with no problems but in the Excursion it tends to need to change a few every couple of 3-4 months. now the FD503 on Rockauto are what came up when I searched them out answering all the info questions when looking for them. I'll change them all out to the Rockauto FD503's and hope this takes care of the coils going out in it. I did a quick search of the difference between the two and only came up with the internal construction and materials used. I found some FD503T for around 15 dollars and from what I read they were discontinued which is the reason for the cheaper price. Going to do some more digging to make sure though.
