Seems like a lot of guys run Shell Rotella 5W-40 synthetic. I've been using Mobil 1 5W-40 Diesel synthetic but I don't have any evidence that my engine can tell the difference between it and say Shell Rotella 15W-40 conventional oil.
Really just personal preference. I like to think that the extra money for the more highly refined base stock and additive package in a synthetic oil is worth it, but again, no real evidence that it is.
As for what the previous owner used, nothing bad happens if he was using conventional and you switch to synthetic, or vice-versa.
I've been told if someone used regular oil for a while and changed to synthetic oil it is possible that some oil leaks will occur. The synthetic oil will go around oil seals that conventional oil did not. If synthetic oil was used no issues will occur by going conventional. Valve cover gaskets and oil pan gasket and oil seals may start leaking. If it happens go back to conventional oil will usually stop the leaking.l don't know this as personal experience... just what I've heard.
I've been doing some studying since I made the post above and it may have been true years ago that switching to synthetic oil might have caused leaks. Today the term "synthetic oil" isn't much more than a marketing term. The additive packages aren't much different between synthetic and conventional oil. With the exception of a few more expensive what are called Group IV synthetic oils, the base stock in most synthetic oil is a little bit more refined than conventional oil, but it's still petroleum oil based and there's nothing to it that will leak where a conventional oil won't.
Hope we aren't starting one of those endless internet oil threads!

Thanks for the info on that. I've always used it as a memory and it's good to know that it might no be so anymore.
