oil type?

06 f250 with 99000 miles, JUST BOUGHT IT 6 WEEKS AGO. Going to change the oil this weekend, but dont know what type. Should i go with syn or non syn. what brand, rating, etc. do you think it would burn oil if i use syn? i have checked the oil a lot and it looks like it does not burn anything. what type of filter also THANKS

If you want to get it locally, go to Walmart, buy a Motorcraft filter part FL-1995, it has the Powerstroke logo on it, and buy 4 gallons of oil. Yes 4 gallons, the truck needs about 15 and then have a quart for topping off. I am running Rotella 5w-40 synthetic and like it, but hopefully my new Schaeffers oil will be here tomorrow or who knows when and then i'll change my oil out.

This belongs in the 6.0 forum, I think.
As for the answer to the question, I was reading a thread here a while back where some Ford engineers decided that synthetic oil was not good for the injectors and that you would do better to just use regular Dino oil, changing it out every 5000 miles.
I adopted that regimine and my old 7.3 started sounding better, less cackle, etc.
Very smooth starts in the morning and a nice quiet idle.

I've been very pleased with the performance of Schaeffers 9000 5W-40, a full synthetic. I've been running full synthetics for the last 3 years and have not had any issues with it. I don't think that a synthetic would cause the truck to start burning oil at all. As for a filter, I use either NAPA gold or a Wix filter, but I've read Motorcraft filters work well too - just don't use a Fram.

Kris, I've noticed a few things since I put my 9000 in two weeks ago.

1. Engine is running smoother from the very get go in the morning. At highway speeds, as smooth or smoother than I had with the Amsoil.

2. My mileage has changed (slightly decreased) since the oil change, but I have also dropped the DK and am runnning the Stanadyne Performance Formula in its place. I ran three tanks with no additive to purge the DK before starting the SPF, and the SPF has brought the mileage up a bit but not to where it was before the oil and additive change. About 0.5 mpg difference. I'm going to clean out my EBP tube and sensor this weekend to see if that helps, since I've never cleaned it in the 20K miles I've put on the truck this year.

3. There is a distinct odor difference with the Shcaeffer 9000. The smell is "better" to me, doesn't seem to have the same pungent petroleum odor as most oils. Also, I used to never smell the CCV fumes while on Amsoil, but now I smell the Schaeffer oil every time I get out of the truck.... DUH!! I just realized I need to get under the truck to check for a potential leak because I had to reroute one of my bypass hoses when I did the oil change... but I have not seen any signs of leaking in my driveway or in the parking lot at work yet... probably just the CCV vapors, but I'll check today for sure.

The aroma from the CCV is more apparent with the Schaeffers. That's one of the first things I noticed.

JT.... thanks for that confirmation. Helps me feel less anxious about waiting until I get home to check under the truck.

Either one buddy. What one person finds to be pleasing, another may find less than desirable.

I think my truck sounds better on Delo 400 than Rotella Syn. 5-40 and even better than Rotella Dino 15-40.

I have not smelled my CCV mod stink since switching to the Delo from Rotella myself. Just throwing it out there.

Kwik thats odd. I know an engineer that used to work for Ford and now works for Nav and he'll beat you over the head with the idea that you should ALWAYS use syn in a 7.3.
Thats how internet arguments start, huh? No, I aint interested in arguing, but I switched to syn and so far it seems to like it a little better. Thats the extent of my personal "scientific analysis".
