I just hit 3000 miles yesterday and changed the oil today.. I put full Synthetic in it and a fram oil filter. I have never used Synthetic before and was wondering how many miles I should go between oilchanges. I have seen many different variations. Some people say 3000, some say 5000, some say 10,000. (Ha!) .
Plus. anyone changing their own oil, beware of the oil filter. I had a hell of a time getting the stock oil filter off.
I will assume that you used the the most popular brand of synthetic, Mobil One in the 0w-20. Mobil/Exxon recommends that you follow the manufacturers recommended oil change schedule. Unless you intend on using oil analysis to track the TBN of the oil, you need to avoid any extended oil change intervals. If you decide to have the oil analized, there is a sponsor of the FTE that does a decent job, Oilguard, and they are very reasonable if you buy 3 test kits at a time.
FWIW, the synthetic blends like Motorcraft, Pennzoil, Havline, Chevron, and others are turning in lower wear metal reports, averagely. Unless you just want to spend more money on oil, the advantages of a full synthetic are marginal at best in the 5w-20 weight of oils.
Ford recommends that the Triton engines use an oil that meets Fords 153-H spec. Only Xw-20 oils meet that spec. FWIW, the Xw-20 oils are on the thick side of the 20w range and just short of a 30w. Most 30w oils will shear to 20w anyway, might as well use the good stuff to begin with. If you want the details on the spec, go the the Oil and Lube forum and search for 153-H. I have posted the spec in detail. By comparison to a dino oil, they run cooler, cleaner, fewer deposits allowed, shear resistant, more stable under adverse conditions, and run longer with fewer wear metals. There are several used oil analysis posted there using the Xw-20's and the results are much better than than you would get using a Xw-30.
