I have been driving a 1986 F150 for the past three years. When I bought him, the tailgate was hard to open. Seemed like something in the handle was sticking or rusted or something. The handle was also bent out. It was like that for a year or so, I didn't open it that often. Then, over the past few years, it has gotten harder, and then finally hasn't budged for a while. I have tried pushing, pulling, and every way I can to get it unstuck. After some browsing of old threads and closer examination, I think the passenger side rod has come loose and fell down inside of the tailgate. Now, I am stumped! What next? From what I've read, it is pretty hard to access the inside of the tailgate, and even if I could, it would have to be when it is open. And I can't get to the rod to unlatch it. Does anyone have advice for me? I can post pictures tomorrow, if that helps.

Regardless, use a flat-blade screwdriver on both sides of the tailgate itself (one side at a time, obviously) and push in the spring-loaded latch mechanism on each side, then open the tailgate. It should present itself to you when you look at the latches, they're really simple, kinda like a standard household door latch.
Three 10mm bolts on the inner side of the tailgate to remove the latch handle assembly. I think Dorman sells replacements in their HELP! line of products.
I joined at some point, but between life and school haven't had time to hang out here. I do reference threads pretty often when I have a question. I love DIYing on my truck, but I also have an awesome mechanic who does stuff when I don't have time. I'm finally having time to mess around with it, so hopefully you will see me more often now! I tried to find the latches, but the side that is messed up is also wedged pretty tight. Might be part of the problem. I will try again and let you know how it goes.
