Success!!!
I was thinking of flushing my steering box out with some diesel then draining it thru the end plate. If I just loosen the 4 bolts enough to let the diesel drain, do I have to worry about the shims coming out? I've never messed with a steering box and don't want to goober mine up.

The shims on mine would not come out without removing all 4 bolts. I think there is a picture of them in the above photos. Even with the 4 bolts and plate removed the shims were stuck in place.
Also the lower bearing seal of mine could only be removed by lightly hitting the steering wheel gear shaft. This was done after the whole assembly was removed.
I am saying this, just to reinforce the idea that the flush of the steering box that you suggest may not work.
Hopefully some of the more seasoned folks can add some advice.
On an off topic steering box (VW Beetle) I was able to use an oil squirt can to flush out the guts. I took one of the end plate bolts loose which opened a passage into the oil filled cavity then pumped oil in through the fill plug hole. I don't know if a similar procedure would work for you. If it would it is a lot easier than removing and re-assembling the bearing retaining plate.
An option could be removing the bottom plate, which may allow the cleaning fluid to pass around the worm gear and the bearings? Look at my pictures above and you can see what I am talking about.
Also, I would remove the side plate that holds the adjustment screw for the sector shaft. That would give you plenty of room to see what is going on inside of your steering box as you clean.
