So I am looking into doing the head gaskets and studs. I am not to concerned about doing the work and will be doing this cab on, but would like some input/advice from the family here.
2005 F250 ccsb and I am getting ready to turn 190K miles. The truck has not really had a hard life and runs well.
The question is, should I go all the way in and replace the lifters, or just do the head gaskets? If I decide to replace the lifters the engine will need to come out, or need to be separated from the trans. I could replace half the lifters but would rather not do half the job. I was thinking about removing the the ones that will come out to check there condition and decide then if they need replaced or not.
I will be doing this work next weekend. I have an easy 115k on my truck. I am replacing the pushrods with the updated ones. That is a tough one. I think I would go the same route in your case.
I vote for HG and updated push rods and leave the lifters alone. But, I'm certainly not one of the experts.
That's a really tough decision, Chuck. You'd have to pull the rear cover and do the rear main seal, which means more tools to find. I'm like Shane. I think I'd do the pushrods and leave the lifters alone if you don't see or have any obvious problems now.
Not me guys!!!! How much more is it going to take to yank the engine with the heads off? Versus how much it will take to yank the engine after its totally assembled?? Especially cab on. I guess it depends on if you want another 11 years out of it. All 15 lifters could look flawless,, it's normally only just one. Preventative maintenance to the max huh??? Lol. You could be fine without them,,, But I've given up on gambling.
The first thing you need to ask yourself is "how long do I plan on keeping the Trk"?
I agree completely with Anthony,
I had an injector tip break off on my wife's 05 in sig, I had to pull the engine, once I got in there it got done, all of it!
Front and rear cover seals, front and rear main seals, bed plate gaskets, studs, heads completely gone through, all new injectors, all new glow plugs, new oil cooler, lifters, BP EGR cooler, etc, etc, .....
Fwiw you can get a set of lifters from Ford for around 200 dollars. I wouldn't be happy with myself if I had to pull an engine for 200 dollars with of parts that I should have done the first time. If you are going to keep it pull the engine by all means and do it! JMO
