I have a 1993 Ford F-350, E4OD, overdrive light just started flashing, shifts a little harder, but trying to find out what needs to be done to shut the flashing light off and return the vehicle back to it's normal self again, Thanks Tom.
Flashing OD light means there is one or more faults detected that will affect transmission operation. It's shifting hard because the control system is in fail-safe mode.
Read the fault codes from the computer, they will let you know what problem was detected and you can start looking for the cause of that.
though much easier using a $15-35 obd1/eec-iv code reader.you get a hold function,audio beep and light to count.
someone once posted a vid using a multi meter to get the code.i was able to figure out which swings of the meter where "true" fluctuations and count 'em for him....but it wasn't pretty lol.
apparently this ones even more simple without a need to count beeps/flashes and just gives you the codes.
im old school lmao.i use this one;

it's stupid simple to use too.it's not exactly hard to count some beeps.
for diesels don't forget to hold wide open throttle (key on.engine off of course.) then while holding wot,turn off hold on scanner.don't release throttle until scan is complete or you'll get false fipl/tps code-23.
