coolant additive necessary?

coolant additive necessary?
lost the thread a while back about coolant additive for diesels. i understand the coolant additive making the coolant more efficient(i think) but is there another benefit to putting the additive in? don't want to risk ruining coolant system or overheating motor if it's something necessary. thanx in advance for info.

It helps with captivation of cylinders if you get the sca additive. I get mine at the local IH dealership premixed with antifreeze. Ford dealers have it also.
