This may a dump question..... Shopping for AE and I see refurbished ones, etc. for misc. prices. all I want to do is check my 7.3. Do I need the complete $359 package or is there a cheaper option just for 7.3?
You need the basic autoenginuity software package and the Ford Enhanced bundle for the 7.3L. Some folks are not too happy with the lastest version of the software, so do some research before buying.
You specifically need the ford bundle with AE to read the good stuff on our 7.3L. If they have "refurbished" versions (how do you refurbish software and an OBDII adapter?), anything within the last 15 years will work - our trucks haven't changed in that time. Just make sure you have a laptop that will work with whatever it is you buy... operating systems have changed in the last 15 years.

Thanks. Refurbished is what the site said. Not sure what it meant. AE with Ford bundle around $359, right ?
if you can get the older software version (prior to 12.x) I would go for it. I still use 9.1 and 5.3. You won't have to make any conversion corrections.
If you don't want to spend the cash on AutoEnginuity for a basic check, you might want to try buying an ELM327 wifi scanner and use the FORScan program. I was asking the same question a month ago and was directed to this alternative. It is not as powerful but will allow you access to most sensors, a buzz test, and even a rough cylinder contribution test. The FORScan beta program is free for windows.
The thing is.....The adage: "you get what u paid for", is very true with these things. Most of the guys here have bought one of every type the Chinese ever made. Some got very lucky and paid 10.00 for theirs and got away with it. Most did not. They crap out quick, Poorly made, falling apart...Etc. You gotta ask yourself, how much time do I wanna spend on Amazon, reordering these things....Tuglys unit is tried and true, I have both AE and Torque Pro with a Mid Priced BAFX Bluetooth unit.($23.00) that has been working great for almost a year now. So it comes down to you slaps your money down and hope you don't roll Snake eyes.... Just my opinion...
