Steering columns

I know the topic has been addressed numerous times but I have not found anything to answer my question. I have seen the "how to" on measuring but mind won't wrap around the concept.
I am buying the Ididit Classic Straight Classic Straight for my F-1 I'm thinking with a Toyota manual steering box and smaller wheel, I need to order the 32 inch column. I am assuming I want to put the wheel back about where it was when stock. Does this sound right to those who have done similar?
I will have the bucket seats in by then, but they will be situated at the same ride height as the stock seat.
If I missed one of the hundreds of threads that give advise on making this selection, please point it out.

Mock it up with a dowel rod, cut off broom stick or whatever. Find something about the right diameter to simulate the steering wheel. Then sit in the seat you are going to use. That is how you figure out what actually feels right to YOU. Might sound like unnecessary trouble when you can just ask on the internet but I decided to calculate it for myself and it worked out very well.

Yeah, I read the Ididit instructions. However, as I said, it just isn't sinking in. No issue though, as you imply, why ask when I can do it myself.

No problem asking at all, but there are so many variables including your physical dimensions. It's a pretty important decision. A steering wheel in an uncomfortable position is no good. You need to get close to right so there really isn't a shortcut.

Denny,
The column length matches my measurement. But remember that the smaller wheel will make it harder to turn the wheel particularly during slow speed maneuvers like parking.

Also a tilt wheel would make it easier to find the right adjustment and allows you to vary the seat couple (see first 4 pages of this SAE document https://law.resource.org/pub/us/cfr/...1100.2001.html). In other words put the seat in a location that is more comfortable for you or to add an adjuster mechanism that goes not only fore and aft but up and down and tilt the cushion like for example a modern power seat mechanism does.

I like the smaller steering wheel as you do but I also like wider front tires . . . which is why I went to a Toyota power steering box.

Just some things to think about.

Thanks Pete, I'll have to print all that info and see if I can decipher it.

The first 4 sections are all you need for seating position.
