Hi,

Bought a speedo cable but it appears the old one from my 1987.5 F250 diesel has a little red gear on it that my new one didn't come with? Is this a separate part?

Yes seperate, the red gear connects to the cable and spins it to register speed. your gear is shot.

 

DRIVEN speedometer gear at the end of the cable is a separate part.

Take the gear to a Ford dealer or auto parts store to get a replacement, should be less than 5 bucks.

Ended up getting my gear off of fleabay. Now is a good time to correct/adjust speedometer if it is off. 1 tooth is approx. 2.5mph IIRC. Less teeth reads faster more reads slower. I have yet to find big box parts store that has avalibility on ford speedo gears.

 

Thanks everyone. Based on the fact that my local Ford store here in Edmonton couldn't supply me with the cable, my guess is I need to look online for the gear. Any suggestions? Couldn't see that rock auto had it.

Count the teeth and google/yahoo/ebay/amazon search by teeth count and color
