Speedometer drive gear help

Welcome to the forum!
I'd bet you mean the driven gear. What trans do you have, a crashbox 4-sp? The end where the cable attaches is hollow tube that is punched/crimped to square to accept the cable. If the cable gets old and hard to turn, the torque required starts to round out the tube.
So you can repeat what the factory did - carefully - and that is crimp it back to a square shape. New ones? Not sure for the early trucks. You can try the usual suspects (Dennis Carpenter, C&G, etc) or Mac Van Pelt (Ford Flathead Engines - VanPelt Parts & Service) who specializes in old Ford trannies.
edit: I believe the piece you want is a 01T-17271-A, which has 18 teeth. That's if you have the 4-sp, but have whoever you buy from confirm.

Here's my suggestion. If you have a speedometer shop close by, it might not be a bad idea, for $30, to have them make you a new speedometer cable with appropriate driven gear installed.
The reason I mention this is because if the gear shaft is that worn, chances are the cable is stressed as well. And it would be a real pain to install a new gear and then have the weak part of the cable snap.
As easy as these are to install, and the low cost ($30 for a new one) it's kind of a no brainer!
Welcome to FTE by the way!

Best speedo cable supplier I've found is Antique Auto Supply, Arlington Texas. 1-817-275-2381
He sells one (yes, it's Taiwanese) that is the correct length, has the correct fittings, and is in a nice metal spiral sheath instead of the plastic tube most modern ones have. Much more flexible and price is very good too. Many of the ones sold for 48-52's are actually for 53 - 56's and don't connect to the speedo head correctly.

My turn. My driven gear in the tranny is rounded out. Cable is good (new), speedo good (was siezed but I fixed it) Cable wont turn when truck is driven. Can this drive gear be replaced easily and how is it done? the little one on the top rear of the tranny where the cable is attached.
Thx in advance.

Flathead Parts Drawings-TransmissionsJustfound all the tranny diagrams online.
Looks like the drive gear is held in with a spring clip. Going to take a look.
r_reed... how much do you want for your extra drive gear?
Thx Rick

rick, i didn't order the gear from job lot, because i found the local used one. i don't have an extra. mine did have a part number stamped into it and i found that part number at job lot. it's much nicer to work on it if you have the tranny in the cab removed. the reason i needed a new one is that the speedo cable was slipping inside the gear: even a new cable. once i got a diff gear, no problem. good luck. dick r
