Temp Gauge "O" equals ???

I am wondering if anyone has any info or experiance that can tell me what temp our gauges actually read. My truck's temp gauge just sits at the "O" in NORMAL, if it wasn't for the fact that it is lower before I warn it up I'd think it was stuck. That is until until the other day when I was pulling a heavy trailer up a grade and the needle went to "R". I was wondering what temp O or R actually is.

Does anyone have both the factory gauge and a real temp gauge that can compare the readings and give us an idea if O is 165 or 185 or whatever, am I overheating if I get to M?

Thanks

Based on personal experience, from before and after I switched to a mechanical temp gauge with real numbers on the scale, the "O" is about 195 and the "R" is about 205-210. If mine gets up to the "M" or "A" then I need to cool it down somehow.

well i know on my buddies truck we just did the Mark8 fan swap and the temp switch range turns on at 185 then cools it to 170. The needle gets to the left side of the M and starts to cool down all the way till it gets between the O and the R.

So if i had to guess, 160-165. but stock gauges are going to be slightly off from each other. Try getting a cheap aftermarket one and screw it into your intake manifold for a dead accurate reading.

A stock 195F Thermostat O-R (mostly O). 180F performance type never past N. 195F Performance type once it reaches O it might as well be a decal. 29 90lb. sacks of cement, towing a commercial portable mixer on a slight grade almost got to R. useihg an infrared temp reader on my 87' 5L, O shows 195F running temp.

Sadly, these gauges are little more than an idiot light. No two read the same..
