For those 5er guys out there, I bought a fifth wheel plug that pigtails into the harness. Now that I need to install in the bed, dont know where it goes. I got this plate with it. For those with the connection in the bed, what are you doing?
Is that the Ford connector??? IIRC the factory ones go above the wheel well. Mine is a Bargman and I put if about a foot from tailgate and about 5" off the floor.
I have a Curt in-bed 7 pin connector. I installed mine about halfway between the tailgate and the wheel well hump inside the bed on the driver's side. That's a pretty standard place, and where the factory version from Ford is placed. Some guys do install them between the wheel hump and the FRONT of the bed. I think someone on here put theirs IN the tailgate, mounted to the plastic cover, and routed out the bottom! I guess it all depends on the length of your wiring, what you find "convenient", and where your fifth wheel connector will reach without being yanked out in a turn.
basically it makes the installation neater. It mounts fairly high up on the bed wall. If you mount it too low and then decide to get a cable lock from Ford, it will cover the 7 pin plug
Check the length of the plug unit that sticks out from the backside of that bracket. I had one on my 2006 that was too long to install on the bed wall without hitting the outside wall and I had to put it on the upright at the center of the left side of the bed so it had enough depth.

Here is where they mount it from the factory. It has a cutout that matches the back of the mounting bracket. That bracket snaps into the hole they cut at the factory and you will see the clips built into the bracket piece. The plug bracket, with the 4 screws, mounts to the bed bracket that has the 2 large screws.
They require the offset bracket as they mount high up on the bed wall and they need to extend the plug harness into the bed as the outer truck bed wall is pretty thin that high up on the truck bed. The plug harness is too long to mount it that high up without the offset bracket.
If you need me too I can take this apart and show you the bracket mounting holes and setup. Let me know.
The cable is on a retractable reel and is app. 12 feet long. The round end is actually a lock
You can run the cable around bikes, tools, you name it and lock them in the bed.
It is a Ford item.
