Trying to put a 7 way plug in the bed of my new 2015. My truck does not have the 5th prep package. It only has the 7-way 4 way combo by the bumper receiver hitch.
I found a 2013 F350 in a junk yard with the 5th prep package that has the 7 way in the driver side of the bed. I have not looked closely at it yet though. So I dont know how it wires up.
I'm thinking about grabbing it, but not sure if or where it will plug and play into my truck.
I do not want to cut and tap and splice to make it work. I want plug and play.
I found these plugs under my truck. Driver side by spare tire. Is this where it may plug into?
If this factory part wont plug and play, I'm thinking it may be easier to grab ones of these aftermarket ones that do claim to be plug and play...
The aftermarket plug and play are extremely easy to install and best of all, you will sure all is working when you are done. That is what I use in my truck. You are wise not to waste your time and mess up your wiring attempting some of the splices I have seen.
Ordered my aftermarket setup off of Amazon. Reasonable price, 2 day shipping, simple plug n play installation....well after you drill the hole that is.
I used the aftermarket one. Worked great and was easy to install. Just make sure you have enough room to plug it in. I mounted my plug up high in the bed and had to use a 3/4" piece of poly to make a spacer.
The Ford add on is the way to go. There are some who have had connection problems when trying to maintain a good connection with the feed thru 7 pin connector used in the after market setup..
Thanks for posting. I am thinking about going the same route with my truck if I have those plugs back near the spare. The pictures are especially helpful.
The one at the junk yard will work just fine. The wiring is the same on all trucks for trailer wires. All the colors are standard. It mounts up high so as to not interfere with the bottom of the bed. if I could find a junk yard with one of those I would love to have it. I got a aftermarket harness and need to make a stand out box so I can mount it under the bed rail out of the way. +
I bought an aftermarket one (Curt) from Amazon and it couldn't be easier. I can't see any reason why the 7-pin connector at the rear won't work just as well as the factory Ford one.
Also, I mounted the receptacle up high near the front of the bed, since I use it for a slide-in camper, not a fifth wheel.
I mounted mine in almost exactly the same spot n my 2006 which works perfectly, that factory pic u posted looks way too high to me (no room for Wire Loom) but what the hell do I know...lol
BTW, I had just bought the A/M version (very easy) FWIW
I got rid of the Hopkins in bed I had put in and went with the factory in bed 7-way just as picture above. I never liked having to tie-wrap the connectors on the Hopkins together and the 7-way always seemed loose.
The Ford harness is the way to go, less extra wires to tie up, solid connections on both ends. Wish i had done this the first time.
Here is where they mount it on the Factory setup. High up with an offset bracket to allow room for the plug between the outer and inner truck bed walls.
I know this is an old thread. I just bought a oem plug to install in my bed, what size and shape whole did you drill/cut to fit the tabs on the back of the mount? Thank you
