I have 1996 f250 XLT regular cab. AM/FM cassette tape player and speakers need to go.
I know the speakers are front 6 1/2 and 6x8 in the rear. But, with all the depth issues I hear about. I am looking for what YOU have installed and if any issues you have ran into.
I am looking to purchase just a head unit (no amp) to power the four speakers.
Crutchfield no longer offers the " what fits your truck for a 96"
Looking to spend no more than $200.00
Any help would be appreciated.
I put Kicker 6x9's in the doors where the 6" round ones used to be. Can't even tell what's in there because the door panels fit like stock.
The rear speakers do have a limited depth available, mine are just cheap "HD" brand 6x9's. I didn't have to cut anything like I did up front.
I found a nice Kenwood deck with Bluetooth streaming and phone capabilities to drive my new speakers. It has a CD player which I didn't want but I couldn't find a solid-state-only deck that had nice features and decent performance without the ghetto blinking lights all over it that do nothing but show off.
I just checked Crutchfield.com. And they do still have the "show me what fits" for the 96 F-Series, and older trucks.
And if you get the right adapters you will not need to cut any of the original truck wiring. The only thing that will need to be spliced is where you wire the head unit into the adapter. Which will then plug into the trucks factory radio plug. And the speakers will just plug in.
I put in pioneers with no problem, I'd just go ahead and replace the factory connection with female spade connectors. I highly doubt you'll be going back to factory after the change. I also put 6x9 boxes in behind the seat, wiring under the carpet and out the existing holes, fits pretty well and securely.
I put kicker speakers same size as factory. Didn't have an issue other than had to punch New holes in doors for mounting because they didn't line up. But no big deal with self tappers. Paid less than 200 shipped to my door.
