I was thinking about upgrading my audio and here's the deal.
First off, I've seen 2 different 6-disc changers in the '04 F-150. Some say "CD-6" on the door and some don't indicate that they are 6-discers until you turn them on and try to load a disc then it asks which disc you want to load.
Anyway, I have the second of those in mine. Anybody know what I'm talking about?
Ignoring that question, let's get to the point. When I crank up the stereo, it seems like the head unit's got the power, but the speakers fall flat. It could be the opposite, so that's why I was wondering if anyone's tried changing the speakers in their F-150 and keeping the head unit the same.
Also, has anyone replaced the rear speakers and driven them by an external amp?
Thanks in advance!

FYI - I was at best buy yesterday, bought a new Pioneer CD unit. I was talking to the installer, and he recommended that I wait until I replace the speakers until I hear the new radio with the stock speakers. He said that Ford put very good speakers in this year. So, I am going to have this new radio installed next week, and I will see what it sounds like with the stock speakers before making a decision on replacing them.
Ford speakers are terrible compared to my Infinity 562.5's i mated them with a Pioneer head unit and wow is there a difference. the bass and mids, highs sound AWESOME!

Miami, I understand that and I would hope so! Great combination!
I guess I'm looking for someone who's attempted to change the speakers, but leave the 6 disc changer (that's almost identical to the audiophile receiver, minus RDS)
Raider, I replaced the radio/CD player with a Pioneer unit because I wanted a MP3 CD player. I also swapped the stock speakers (SuperCrew) for some 4 way Pioneers and they are light years ahead of the Ford speakers (not Audiophile option). Check ebay for a good deal, or send me an email and I'll give you the dealer info.
I liked the Ford radio and CD player. I thought it had good sound and good features. But MP3 is great - 7 or 8 hours of music on one CD.
Well, I was up at sears today and the one here is closing out their car audio. I'm gettin 4 Pioneer TS-A6870R 6"x8" speakers. I'll post the "results" here to let all know.
Has anyone added dynomat to their doors? I opened up the front and noticed the speaker's right against the door metal. It seems it would perform better with a baffle or dynomat.
I put the TS-6870R in the rear doors and the TS-6880R in the front doors. It was an experiment/price thing. The speakers are really good. I like them.
Screw,
I installed one of the speakers in the left door, so I could balance back and forth to hear the difference. With the factory head unit, the factory speaker sounds better as of now. Did you have to give it any time for the woofer surround to "break in" or anything?
I never tried the Pioneer speakers with the stock radio/CD. I would think what you did would not be a good test, because the Pioneers will take more power (volume) to drive them than the stock speakers.
All things being equal, speaker quality is a subjective thing. I like mine way better than the Ford speakers. They sound better everyday, but I don't think it is a break-in thing. The more power I give them, the better they sound.
