Engine Coolant Temp Sensor locations?

I was going to order a ECT gauge and was wondering where to mount the sensor. I have already used the port under the T-stat for the coolant filter. The gauge sensor is a 1/8 NPT. Would the block drains be a good location, or is there another location that will work.

I know the coolant filter housing has a port, but I would prefer the sensor be on the motor.

subscribing because I want to move my aftermarket sensor off the coolant filter housing. So far the only solution I have come up with is a tee into the factory sending unit hole. Or just get rid of the factory one.

Thanks, so far this is the only thing I have found: 44 MM or 1 3/4 Inch Water Sender Attachment

It looks like it would work, but I would prefer to mount the sensor on the motor. I would like to know what the block drain is so I can have all the parts ready to go. Don't want to spill to much coolant

The block drains are 1/2" pipe thread. Easiest one to access is driver side, IIR pass side is partially blocked by starter.

I think the filter head for the coolant filter on Mine had a port for a sender.

Yes mine does also, but I would prefer to mount the sensor on the motor not after the T-stat or on the filter housing.

I will mount at the block drain, I was just wondering if there was another port somewhere else. I guess not.

I'm curious why people don't want to use the port on the remote filter? Are you worried that the temp differential between the two will be significant? Next time you pull into your driveway with the truck to temp, take an infrared thermometer and check the filter housing and the water pump. Let us know how far apart they are. I bet not much.

If you have a sensor after the T-stat, and the T-stat does not open the sensor located at the bypass coolant filter will not read what the actual motor temp is. Also, I think that if at the coolant filter and there is no water flow because of a blockage or no flow you would not get a reading since there is no coolant flow (maybe even air)

All of the coolant filters I've seen on 7.3's bypass the T-stat.

That is true, but the location is very high, if you do get a big leak than you have the air problem again which will result in a bad or no reading. I still think the block drain location will be the best location. I might be wrong, but just can't see the disadvantage of this location.

If you're leaking so much coolant that you have air coming out of your water pump, you have much bigger problems than reading the temp!
