I have a buddy who has a '93 Ranger with the 3.0L and a stick. Tall tires + plus some extra weight permanently affixed to the bed means that the little 3.0L is getting its but kicked trying to putt around on the farm.
Looking for an easier type engine swap that'll give it a little more torque down low, nothing crazy as this is just a farm service/chore truck.
Truck is a 4x4. Taller tires are needed for clearance.
Current engine is about shot, so that why he is leaning toward an engine swap.
So it sounds like the easiest engine swap would be a 4.0 OHV, then find a carb manifold. Re-wiring half the truck is not something I'm interested in doing.
By TC you mean transfer case? Why would we need that?

for your year ranger i would think finding a donor ranger with the motor and do a direct swap would be feasible. the 93's were not that complicated. you might find only needing to swap the computer (obvously) and the current wiring harness matching up since both motors were available for that year.
Axle swap: Not too bad out back, just make sure the rear u-joint matchs and the brake backing plate mounting is the same.
Front--a bit more work. It's either that or change gears in the truck, and you can expect to pay about $1000+ to have that done. Gears are only about $200 per axle, but the labor to get it right plus new bearings runs up the price.
4.0 OHV was rated 155 or 160 HP, torque 225 or so.
