I have a buddy who has a 93 Ranger with the 3.0L. He bought it with a lift and over size tires. We swapped the bed for a small utility bed and mounted a generator/welder inside. Its a farm truck, mostly off road use. With all these mods its way under powered.
What would be a good choice for an engine swap to get some more torque on the bottom end? Its a stick, btw.
It would be a lot easier & cheaper to just change the rear differential to a "higher" ratio. Since it's a farm truck, you don't need low revs at freeway speeds. Gearing it down will give you all the power you need.

Exactly right. Check the axle code on the drivers door. If it's an 84 like on my 87 Ranger it's a 3.45. I think 4.11 or even a 4.56 are your options to get more hauling grunt.
Higher-numerical gears are a great idea, if the truck is running well at the moment.
The 3 liter ford V6 engines are all lazy on lift off, once they are going they are not bad but it is easy to kill the engine when you try to lift a load from a stop! My 1994 with 3 liter had 3.73 gears and it was still bad off idle!
I replaced it with a 302 Auto, there is no way I would ever change back!
If you were to change the gears you would have to go to at least a 4.56 gear to cure the poor bottom end!
