I have a 1965 f100 352 3spd manual on column s/b styleside
I have replaced the shift tube, levers, nylon spacers bearings and etc
months ago while I had the engine and transmission out
Last weekend was hooking the trans linkage up to the trans and
to see how the shifter was going to feel. Guess what
1st and reverse lever works but not 2nd and 3rd binds up
and won't release right.
So here I go pull the steering column back out take it all apart
find the new shift tube is about 1/4 longer than my old tube
and can see the shift button which is square cut
is binding up in the lever on 2nd and 3rd lever
I don't know this for sure, but I have heard that the power columns to the manual columns are just a little difference in length. It could be you got the wrong one. I think I heard the manuals are the longer columns, but I could be wrong.
I rebuilt my column just as you stated, and I had no issues. Everything went right back together.

IIRC the steering shaft is the only difference in the power/manual columns, with the power being about 3/4" shorter. There weren't any differences in the shift tube or outer column.
For what it's worth...'66 was the first year for a factory installed power steering.
For the original poster...Haven't run into that specific problem. On these older rigs sometimes it is easier to modify what you have to get the job done. Can the new tube be shortened and the button be dressed to work?
Where did you get the shift shaft? I bought all my stuff from Dennis Carpenter, via Sam's Ford Parts in Denver. I had a bad experience with a couple of the lowered price outfits, and so I decided to go with the most expensive stuff to make sure it would go well.
Could it be that it is some of the less expensive and lower quality Chinese stuff??
I bought all of my new parts from Dennis Carpenter,
I have sent them pictures about the things we talked about
in the earlier post and they did say they had a problem with the ones they
have in stock also.
So I got a credit from them for the shift tube
Either I will put my old one back in or I will find a vendor
that has the correct one

Reason: Added length of shift tube.
