Air Box Clip

The plastic part of the airbox that the clip secures to has broken off. The clip now has nothing to grab. Has anyone come up with a solution to this? I have a couple ideas, but looking at the engineering of this box, I bet this problem happens a lot and a great solution already found.

Seriously though, I was able to limp by with a coarse thread screw holding the lid down until I got my new airbox.

And after 2 years of my original broken airbox sitting in my garage I threw it away literally just last week.

I have 2 OEM air filter boxes, you can have one of them. Just pay shipping. Send me a PM if your interested.

I bent a scrap piece of aluminum into a J shape and mounted it with a pop rivet. I'll have to find the pic. It worked for years before the 6637 went on.

.

Edit: not sure what the forum software is doing, but it keeps mangling my url closing tag, changing it from /url to /ame. Probably gonna need to copy & paste it to watch.

Re-edit: fixed mangled link . . .

I used a dremmel tool and cut a slot wide enough to get the spring clip thru into the air box itself. The slot will be below the filter's gasket so it wont hurt a thing. Ran it that way for a couple years before I installed the AIS. Best of all, it was a free fix.

My airbox was allowing silt and sand to get through even with no broken clips... I'd check it out closely before you burn any calories on a hokey fix. Getting a good solid CLAMPING filter setup will keep your engine from being sanded out!

Same thing happened to me,

Drop the clip to the rest position, put your arms weight on the top of the box for the seal to be good, Mark the spot in the middle of the opened clip latch. Drill a small hole and thread in a stainless screw. Done.

Thank you for the replies. I used two self-tapping screws to share the load equally. They have the attached washer so you can leave them out a little and the clip goes in the slot and holds very securely.

Looks like you got er done. I went looking for the thread with those pics and found this. Mine was not an original idea, props to hammer 65.
For what it's worth I never had any problems with my box leaking, there are a half dozen guys from the TX chapter that admired the condition of my wheel at 200k.

Everybody take a deep breath, over 100k was with a K&N. I could stick a white paper towel in the tube and come out clean.

Just so happens I had one of those laying around. Now I have time to dirty up that new paper filter before I call Clay.

I like the J hook idea. I know a lady that bought an 02 with a broken air box. I ran a small pan head zip screw into the plastic and hooked the clamp onto it to hold the lid down. Told her to order a new air box or an AIS right away.

2 years later that zip screw is still there and still working. I was shocked when I saw it.
