Was servicing my K&N drop in filter today and had a heck of a time
removing the top portion of the box.Seems the nuts that are in
the bottom portion have stripped out from the housing itself.
They are still in the plastic, but loose. What a knuckle buster putting it all back together.Any ideas how to secure and/ or replace them?I'm thinking maybe Loctite.I zip tied the box just in case.
Once you cross-thread those screws and strip the plastic splines in the air box, I'm not sure of a good way to fix it. You could Loctite like you said, but I've always ended up using cable ties like you are now.
In the shop we did see an Intrepid come in where the screws were cross-threaded and the splines stripped to where you couldn't open the box, so we had to replace the entire box. Wasn't cheap from the dealer at the time...
Had the same problem when I bought my F150. After removing the box, I found where the previous owner had drilled a small hole at an angle down past the original one and used a small drywall screw to hold one of the corners together. I ended up having to cut the other screws out and put in dryall screws in the other 3 corners. Works fine for now.
Thanks for the input guys. It's secure for now.I'll look for a bottom
half of the box before the next service.I do it about 2x a year.I drive alot of dusty roads and fine sand beaches.
Sudsrat - I had the same problem. I tried regular silicone, didn't work. The only fix is a two part mixture I found at NAPA.
It comes in a black/blue two cylinder syringe 'looking' device. The name is '5 minute plastic weld'. Mix the two parts together on a piece of cardboard, let sit for 2-4 minutes. (allows the accelerant to heat the material up) place a small dab around each of the 'metal studs' - be careful not to get any in the thread portion. Then let it stand for about 5-10 minutes and you can tighten away!
