Air box replacement?
During a cold spell in MN in the last 2 weeks, my 1997 Aero had a hard time starting in the morning and after several minutes of a no start I floored the accelerator pedal figuring to lean out the air/fuel mixture to get it to turn over. It stumbled a couple of times and then "BOOM" a back fire. Eventually I got it started after letting it sit in the sun and hooking up a battery charger, BUT when I went to check the oil the other day, the air box assy. was DEMOLISHED! It was literally in pieces!!! I had to use duct tape to piece the upper part of the air box together and then duct taped the air filter to the upper air box for a temporary fix as I had been driving without air filtration for almost a week.
Anyway, I called several Ford dealerships and they want 280.00 for a new air box for the 4.0l engine. I called around to some used parts places and the only one I can find is from a 94 Aero 4.0l for 25.00.
Thus my question is, "Will the air box assy. from the 94 fit my 97?"
I am hoping it will...
Thanks for your replies....
a. Cone filter. The 3.0 doesn't flow enough air for the size to matter
b. MAF cone adapter. Basically a ring of plastic, usually 3" in diameter, with a perpendicular square piece of plastic around the outside to bolt to the MAF sensor housing.
c. Plexiglass, or composite, or sheetmetal, whatever... to make an airbox from (since you don't want hot engine air).
Build a box to fit in the space of your old airbox, leave the side facing the headlight open.
Locate where the maf sensor will come into the box, mark bolt holes and inlet. Open these up, bolt up MAF to outside of box, adapter to inside of box. Then attach cone to filter. Attach MAF back to air hose.
This should do the trick.
