Empty filter,fuel pump bad?

Hello
My 73 f100 is getting hard to start , and i noticed the clear fuel filter before carb runs empty as the truck sits for a while. It starts up fairly quick when cold and on choke, but when parked more than 10 min, enough for the filter to empty, i have to run the starter for about 30 sec.
It seem to have slowly gotten worse over time, and more so after upgrading to pertronix ignitor(?) coincidence i think.
When driving it throtles fine ,accellerate fine.

Those clear fuel filters can be deceiving. It's hard to diagnose a bad fuel pump just by looking at them, but if it's bone dry then that's bad. It could be the fuel pump, or it would be a leak or obstruction in the system. Run the fuel pump off a small gas can under the hood to trouble shoot it. Even a tiny pin hole in the steel fuel line under the truck can prevent the fuel pump from pulling fuel from the tank, and enough crud and rust in the tank can clog the screen on the fuel pick up in the tank.

Be careful, engine starters have a limited (split seconds) duty cycle, they will burn up quick when abused like that. Maybe not today or tomorrow but, much too soon.

The Pertronix should help it start easier. It's difficult to look at the fuel filter itself and determine fuel pump output. Don't guess, check to be sure. It's best to check both volume and pressure. This is where the Ford Shop Manual is invaluable.

Volume specification will be something on the order of 1 pint in 30 seconds or less. If the pump is old would be inclined to replace it but, new pumps need to be checked as well.

Set fuel float "dry" height, but be sure to check fuel level inside carburetor itself, and once again anytime the fuel system is modified. Then, reset idle mixture and idle RPM for best "lean drop" setting. Hope this helps.

sorry.
forgot the facts on this one... new fuel line, cleaned tank, new pickup/sock,new edelbrock
carb and performer intake. I cant seem to find any leaks on steel fuel line. But its new that the clear filter is running empty, the fuel has to go somewhere so im guessing back to the tank. Also im only running midship tank, havent gotten around to cleaning the rear tank yet..

The fuel can't go back to the tank, these trucks don't use a return line. You can out a pressure fitting inline to test pressure and use a clean bucket to test fuel pump volume... Or just redneck it and pull the line and put your thumb over the end.

Since you have done all the new install on fuel system, why not put in a fuel pump? I did. Peace of mind when it comes knowing the system is complete. I used an Edelbrock low psi unit. Works like a charm.

Electric pump eh.. "might as well while im at it" is just a neverending story on this one.
But yes ... Beside this issue, got the truck runnin pretty good for now,im guessing dry level on carb could be the issue?(Tedster9) .
Just took a ride for food, held gaspedal halfway to the floor and it started right up :-)
Dont know if this is the proper way to start warm engine, its different from before, but hey...

Also,im startin to feel bad about the worn interior..."might as well...."

No, not an electric pump. Mine is an Edelbrock mechanical pump. It just puts out 7psi to the carb. Works great. And, yes, once I get started, the truck project never ends with a simple repair.
