Surging at highway speeds, stalling while decelerating/coasting
Hello, gentlemen, newbie to diesels, longtime Ford fan here. I picked up an 86 F250 XLT Lariat 6.9 Banks turbo last night. I drove it at 55 for about 20 miles, smooth as silk. Drove it another 20 miles at 65-70 and it started to surge. When I got off the freeway and coasted to the stoplight, it stalled. Had to put it in park and out restarted after about 4 attempts.
Is this a filter issue? CGR? I'm 200 miles from home and this old girl is my only ride, lol. Any insights are appreciated.
welcome to FTE.
it could be a dirty fuel filter, bad fuel lift pump, or it could just be low on fuel.
these trucks are known to run out of fuel with the gauge still reading between 1/8 and 1/14 tank. some at 1/2 tank.
the pickup int he tank cracks and sucks air.
to test the lift pump, pull the dipstick and see if the oil smells like diesel or if the oil level is over full.
I filled the tanks before the trip, so o know I'm not out of fuel, and I'm going to change the filter as soon as the parts store opens this morning, lol.
Sounds like it's sucking air. Change the low pressure fuel pump whole your at it... it's only $30 and they usually have em in stock. It's only two bolts, so it's not a big deal.
I had a similar issue and it was due to it sucking air through an inline fuel filter I added. Do you have a 2 tank system? If so, does it do this with one tank and not the other?
I would start with the fuel filter since it is an easy swap. If it still does it, then change the mechanical fuel pump to make sure it is good. After that look for areas where it could be sucking air in.
