Blew up my 7.3 idi 😭😭 but that just mean I have something to keep me busy after work lol. Pretty sure it's a head gasket but I'm not positive. It white smokes and over heats no water not the oil though which is weird to me but with the motor running and the radiator cap off you can see the cylinder pressure pushing up through the radiator. If it is just a head gasket I don't really know the motors history is there anything I should do while I have to tear it down anyway?? Obviously I'll do arp headstuds is there a recommendation on gaskets to use
Sounds like HG. I did this and wished that I had done it with the engine out on a stand along with a re ring. It can, however, be done in the truck. I sent my heads to a machine shop. Used a Fel Pro head set and valley pan. Here is a link to a thread I read through many times and found helpful. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...flow-tank.html
If it is head gasket, while the heads are off I would renew the valve oil seals, regrind the valves, seats and nicely grind them to seal. Of course if the rest of the engine looks good, no major scratches in the bore, no extreme wear. And if I were u and would want to keep the rig, I would rering the pistons to get rid of the huge ring gap, I know it means money, but I can not wait personaly to rering mine, the blow by is just too much, specialy when planing to use turbo.
i was really surprised when Chris told me a lot of people do not want to pay the extra to check for cracks, just lap the valves and call it good.
he has to tell those people there is no warranty at all on the heads.
I do it every time the gasket is shoot on diesels, as there is always a chance it has a tiny crack. And it can be in the valve channel, or under the valve seat, no way u can inspect it just with your eyes.
People do silly things. Couple customers wanted to change only timing belt without the idlers and tensioner, or water pump if it is driven by belt. Several came later with apology when I convinced them to change everything, as usually their friends went cheep and ended with valves bent, pistons cracked, rods bent. But if they want to there is no warranty and we make a written agreement that it was customers desire to do it this way even I warned them it is not to the manufacturer procedure. Later when they yell at me I just pull it out.
agreed. when i was running the body shop people like that were told to go somewhere else for repairs because we would not do halfassed repairs. fix it properly or not at all.
we had enough work that we could be picky about what we did and did not do.
Is there anything we can do to make our heads better while I have them off I'm already running a turbo so I might rering and hone the bores while I have it torn down
