I have not had a lot of head gasket experience on 4.0L. But the Mayo is your antifreeze and oil mixing. Some engines make it in the oil cap when there is nothing wrong. It is because of natural condensation. If you are looseing antifreeze there is a good chance you have a problem. You can do a simple test to see if there is a problem. Pull the spark plugs a see if any are so white they look new. If you get one or more that is like this it is a sure sign of head gasket. This is caused because when the antifreeze enters the combustion chamber and it is burned it will raise the cylinder temp and cause the carbon on the plug to be burned off. The experience I did have with a 4.0L the machine shop that I sent the heads to said that the 4.0L heads like to crack like the 2.9L. I would advise that even if you do not intend to pressure test the heads at least get them resurfaced.
As far as price goes I would say that it would be between 6-8 hours, plus parts.
Sodium Silicate fixed the blown head gasket in the abused 88 2.9L I drive for work. It is nothing short of miraculous when it works. Not sure of the risks but I know of two other engines it is working in and being driven daily! The 2.9 I used it in has been overheated numerous times but runs nice and cool now. Follow the directions.

Just an FYI, it is very uncommon for a 2.9 to have head gasket problems but it is very common for the heads to crack if it is overheated. When the coolant makes it to the crankcase the bottom end of the engine will require rebuilding.
