Hi guys!
I have a question for you!
I just put my engine back on is frame and I will be ready to start it in few weeks.
I've decide to transfer my engine to 12v.
I bought a pertronix ignition 12v.
I've read that we can run the starter on 12v has long has we don't crank for too long.
My question:
In the past those engine were positive to frame.
If i switch for 12 v I still need to do so?
If I want my starter to turn on the good side... (If I'm not wrong...)
HI, I changed my 50 Ford from 6V positive ground to 12V neg ground. The starter will turn the right way. I don't know why but it does. That question has been asked many times. The starter sure turns over fast too! Patrick
Interesting question, one that I had to look up because "everybody knows" a DC motor will spin the opposite direction if the polarity is reversed. Turns out this is the case only with motors having permanent magnets.
Starter motors (at least the ones we are interested in) have electromagnets and so work fine connected either way. I still don't understand it but, everyone can at least stand down now, crisis averted etc.
Just FYI it is because Starter motors are Series wound. Meaning that the current flows thru the stator THEN thru the rotor, so no matter which way the current comes in the motor will turn in the same direction.
