Starter Bendix question
That brings me to the question. How do you unlock a new bendix? I pulled the pin and slipped the old bendix off the starter shaft. The new one is compressed and locked (for shipping they tell me). But no one seems to know how to unlock it. One guy told me he has seen a guy do it with a pen or small screw driver. He said he slipped the tool into a slot and it popped apart. I can see what looks like a button just inside where the threads are but I have been jacking with this thing for a while and NOTHING!!! Yes, I know it's best to replace the entire starter but my starter is fine and I already have the new bendix. Besides, I'm looking at a new engine soon. It should be as simple as popping it open, slipping it on the starter, and putting the pin back in. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
BTW, thanks for the 2 comments last time. I don't mean to sound ungreatful, I just don't need to buy a new starter right now and I need to drive her Saturday.
Thanks!
