Timing a 302

I got my freshley rebuilt 302 back in my truck. It runs but needs to be timed. I see the marks on the harmonic balancer but I don't see any marks on the timing cover. Aren't they supposed to be there and if so where at?

There should be a metal pointer that bolts up to the timing chain cover. Without this you could find exact TDC for cylinder one, and make some kind of pointer (I used a coat hanger once in a pinch), setting it so it points right at 0 on the balancer markings, with the engine at TDC.
