Stereo head unit or not?

So I am doing a restomod type truck I want a nice sound system with subwoofers and I guess just a pair of good 6.5 inch speakers in the kick panels.

when I listen to music now its all streamed from my phone, I rarely use the radio.

I like using blue tooth for hands free talking but my current head unit in my other truck is too hard to understand and it messes up any talk to text I try to do.

I like having a volume **** for some reason and like the idea of having a head unit but I don't know why.

I love having a remote gain **** for my subwoofer its a must have on this build.

do I get a seperate amp to run the 6.5 speakers and just use the headphone jack on my phone to run everything?

I thought about doing just an amp and streaming, but working a phone while driving sucks. A hundred buck head unit with USB connections is in all my vehicles now.

Ive been researching exactly this question.

Check out secret audio. Secretaudio SST - Secret Audio Hidden Radio | Classic Car Stereos. They have a lot of cool systems. They offer a small Bluetooth receiver that connects to an under seat "brain". There is a dash mount control unit or a handheld remote unit. Pretty reasonable priced too. They offer complete kits of varying size.

Also this article, doesn't seem quite as handy as the Secret Audio but...Stereo for Hot Rods - Bluetooth Audio For Any Hot Rod they talk about a Bluetooth receiver with hard mounted level ***** for streaming. It could be mounted under a seat or something.

Something i saw on here or another site a while back was a detachable face head unit where they solder an extension from the head unit to the face and then mount the face where you want it (1/2" thick). I saw a pic of one mounted on the visor and it looked pretty slick

That's a pretty trick idea. Usually the faces are just connected with ribbon cable I think. Ribbon cable is easy to work with and can be bought by the foot.

Could take it one step further and mount the chassis of the head unit right behind the dash with just a little slit in the dash to insert a CD. Hmmm....

Its definitely on my list of options. The other for me is to make the 48-50 dash radio delete cover mount on a hinge and hide the radio behind it. flip the cover down to show the radio and flip it up to make it look stock. Just not sure if i want to keep the stock dash

True, but I find that once I set an equalizer for a sound environment I usually don't mess with it. Bluetooth is great but you are right, the controls need to be simple. Since the equalizer can be on your phone all you need is the old school **** for volume and another **** to fast forward or back. Also a small button to pair your bluetooth devices (maybe hidden). Haven't seen any devices that simple. Everyone wants to be fancy.
